My suspicion is that the 2.8 env. Variables occur before the 2.9 making 2.8 the 'default'. This has nothing to do with WinEdt so the best way forsward is to remove MiKTeX 2.8 and2.9 altogether and then install a fresh version of 2.9. – Peter Jansson Feb 13 '13 at 7:20. Since I am not very familiar with Windows 7 (I am Windows XP user ), I do not have any idea how to solve my problem. Any light on this will be much appreciated. I just installed portable MiKTeX 2.8 on a couple Win 7 machines (one 32-bit, one 64-bit)by copying the directory tree from Windows XP.
implementation of TeX/LaTeX and related programs. TeX is a typesetting system written by Donald Ervin Knuth who says that it is intended for the creation of beautiful books - and especially for books that contain a lot of mathematics. It is very easy to install MiKTeX on Windows PC. The Setup Wizard guides you through the installation process. You don't have to be a computer expert. A complete set of additions (programs, styles, fonts) are available to help you typeset your documents.
MiKTeX's integrated package manager installs missing components from the Internet, if required. This allows you to keep your TeX installation as minimal as possible (“Just enough TeX”). It Console helps you to keep your TeX system up-to-date by installing the latest package updates.
It comes with TeXworks, a TeX frontend which you can use it to edit and preview LaTeX documents. The program is open source. You are welcome to redistribute the tool under certain conditions.
To set up a basic TeX/LaTeX system, download and run the Basic MiK TeX Installer. The software has the ability to install missing packages automatically, i.e., this installer is suitable for computers connected to the Internet.
